Cry Wolf
A boy in a village who craved attention cried, “Wolf, wolf!” and the townsfolk came running only to find the boy laughing hysterically, a ruse and a not very funny one at that…
The next day the same boy got some sheep’s blood and smeared it all over himself and began again crying, “Wolf, a wolf is eating me!” and the townsfolk came running again, this time a little more prepared for the boy until they saw the blood smeared all over him. “My God, the wolves ate him!” to which the boy began to laugh hysterically, a ruse yet again and a not very funny one at that…
The following day the boy was preparing his next trick when out of the woods came a pack of hungry wolves, “Eek, wolves!” shrieked the boy but the townsfolk didn’t coming running this day, “Oh it is only the boy playing yet another ruse, let him howl away…” and howl away he did as the wolves ate him alive…
For years the American people have been played by politicians, ruse after ruse after ruse; Democrats crying, “Xenophobic! Homophobic! Racist!” and Republicans crying,“They’ll take away your guns! Your freedom! Your jobs! The future of your children!” These politicians would then proceed to get into office and be nothing more than puppets for the special interests and big donors, the urgency to get them into office gone overnight; the winners busting open Champaign bottles and laughing hysterically behind closed doors at their ruse, a not very funny ruse…
This continued for decades, and much like the boy who cried wolf, the politicians continued to act untouchable, as if their ruse’s effect would never dull, as if their actions held no consequences; as with the boy who cried wolf, they didn’t foresee the damage until it was too late.
2016, the wolves have come, and both sides are screaming “Wolf!” but which base will actually believe? Which base will mobilize? Which base will rally, despite their political leaders dulling their ears and senses over the years? Whoever that ends up being will be who wins in 2016, my fear is that it will be my side who will not believe…
Hillary Clinton (D) is crying “Homophobic! Xenophobic! Racist! Misogynist! Nationalist!” and for the first time in decades she is right. Donald Trump (R) wants to build a wall, wants to limit or temporarily ban muslims from entering the country, has been married multiple times and who is currently married to someone twenty years younger than himself, and is openly against globalism. Donald Trump (R) represents a real, genuine threat (or wolf) towards the progressive left’s ideology, but who honestly is buying into the narrative? Everyone is racist, everyone is xenophobic, everyone homophobic… gasp* The base clearly has had enough and they are starting to question, even rebel against the status quo, many of which will go third party or just stay at home because they don’t believe that the threat to their ideals is real because of their leaders' constant ruses at their expense.
Donald Trump (R) is crying, “Your country will never be the same again! You will lose your 2nd amendment! You will be unsafe! This is the last chance to save the country!” and for the first time in decades he is correct. Hillary Clinton (D) will appoint enough Supreme Court justices to remove your 2nd amendment (and will), she will allow thousands upon thousands of muslims to immigrate which will make American a much more dangerous place (look at Europe), and if Hillary Clinton (D) does becom POTUS she will change the country in a way that Americans will never get Her back. Hillary Clinton (D) does not just represent a real threat to the conservative/libertarian right’s ideology, she represents its literal death, but who is honestly buying into the narrative? After so many decades of peddling the same lies as ruses, who now will believe that the wolf is in fact at the very door?
I fear that many, on both sides, will hear the cry “wolf” this election and not come running. I fear that many will wait this one out, not believing the actual urgency is real, and the cost will be in lives. I fear that for far too long political leaders have “cried wolf” and now that the wolf is at the very door no one will listen. I fear that our very country hangs in the balance and those that wish to warn of its impending doom can only cry wolf. I fear no one will answer.
