What's New (2018)
December
Week 1 (December 1-8): We are trying to tweak our holiday traditions to make it have less focus on gift giving. We thought it would be fun to make Christmas a month long affair with different Christmas movies each week and different Christmas desserts each week etc. December 1 we made a gingerbread house and today (December 8) we made egg nog and candy cane ice cream! I finished the two Christmas ornaments, now just need to make Benji's for this year.
Kalyn is starting to smile more but she will only smile for Papa! She is generally a good sleeper but sometimes she will cry and cry until she is held. She loves her snuggles! She has a hemangioma on the side of her stomach that is starting to grow more- I hope it will stop growing so we don't have to take her to the doctor about it!
Benji was thrilled about peeing in the potty for a few days. He constantly asked to sit on the potty so we would take off his pants and underwear and he would sit for a minute then want to get dressed again. A few minutes later he would want to sit on the potty again so we repeated the whole ordeal. Now a few days later he is bored with it and has stopped asking! We will keep working on it :)

Week 2 (December 9-15): We made Benji's Christmas ornament this week! He has been liking to watch movies with us- we watched Labyrinth and he started dancing to the music and he got scared during Coraline! He also likes to head bang to music (ie. Leo Moracchioli's metal cover of Adele's Hello). Benji turned 3 this week!
Kalyn loves to stare and faces and she will coo at you. Her hemangioma started to bleed when it got rubbed which was sad! We might need to try to get it removed if that happens frequently.

Week 3 (December 16-22): This week we tried to make bread pudding the old fashioned way-boiling it in a bag! We followed the recipe from a Youtube channel we watch that talks about 18th century cooking. It turned out really good- it has a weird texture but tastes really good when you make a sauce for it. I read the book "Saints: The Standard of Truth"- a book about the early history of our church. It was pretty good but I still like "The Work and the Glory" better.
Benji loves swimming in the bath tub. Although he doesn't say the words he tries to sing along to "Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer".
Kalyn loves to be held and be around people. She gets scared when Papa does a warthog snort! lol

Week 4 (December 23-31): We had a quiet Christmas at home with just our little family. We had fun watching Christmas movies and making homemade ice cream. Poor baby Kalyn didn't have fun Christmas day though- she had a hair wrapped around her toe that started to cut into her skin! Papa was the one who found it- at first we couldn't figure out why she was crying. Poor thing :( Papa's new nickname for Kalyn is "Rust Bucket" because of her red hair. Benji loves dancing to music! He has also been playing a lot with his toy cars- sometimes he will flip over his mattress and play with the cars underneath.
November
Week 1 (November 1-3): The siding crew have finished half of the garage- I think the barn door looks great! I got my results back from Ancestry DNA and found out that I'm: 73% England, Wales, Northwestern Europe, 21% Ireland and Scotland, 3% Sweden, 3% France. Looks like we are a little Viking family!
Week 2 (November 4-10): Kalyn's eye lashes grew in this week but they are very light- she is going to have my problem when she is older and look like she doesn't have any! I think she might have a virus, she has diarrhea and a bad diaper rash! Got a prescription for a cream from the midwife but Shoppers Drug Mart has to order the ingredients in to make it... She seems fine though except she screams when her diaper is being changed! She only gained 1oz this week. Benji has a new game of spinning around in circles with his eyes closed while trying to eat dry cereal. He thinks it is hilarious and will giggle uncontrollably while doing it! The crew finished the siding on all three buildings- now we just need the eavestroughs installed. Winter tires were put on this week and we had the electrician come over to fix some problems. Also got a quote for the repairs of the flooring upstairs. Continued priming ceiling in bedroom. I'm now 6 weeks postpartum so can start exercising again! For the last two weeks we started our exercising routine maybe 2-4 times per week without any weights. This week I'm going to start using weights and hopefully go up to 4-5 days. It feels good to be able to do things again!
Week 3 (November 11-17):
The eavestroughs were installed this week which concludes the work from Enex Siding. I think it looks great! Starting to get colder out- we've had to start a few fires in the mornings to warm the house up before turning on the heaters at 7pm. I love the wood fires, makes the house feel so cozy! Both kids have enjoyed baths this week- Benji likes to swim around and was even enjoying pouring water over his head- he normally doesn't like that part. Kalyn likes her baths too. She now weighs 9lbs 3 oz. After changing Benji's diapers he points to the dirty one and says "ewww", I'm hoping this is one step closer to him wanting to try the potty! This week I started working on an animation for our movie reviews! We have over 500 movies watched and graded- we are planning on making youtube videos about each one- its a lot of work but a fun thing to do together :) Happy Birthday to Judi, Grandma English!

Week 4 (November 18-24):
Last week I started and this week I finished a little few seconds long computer animation. We want to start making videos of our movie reviews and this will be used as the introduction to the videos.
It was so cold at the beginning of the week; -26 with the windchill! It's too early to be that cold!
We celebrated American Thanksgiving on November 22. We had roast chicken, stuffing, potatoes and gravy, and I made an apple pie! We are trying to be more obedient to the Word of Wisdom- not many people do this- but it says to only eat birds and mammals in the winter months. So we decided that Thanksgiving would be the start of winter and eating those kinds of meat while Easter would signify spring and the end of meat for the spring and summer. It's a good time to give thanks for the food we have! Poor little Benji wasn't feeling good though and had diarrhea three times! It was a big mess and he had to be showered down after each time :( He didn't even want to eat which is unlike him. Luckily he started feeling better later in the evening.
Kalyn started doing half smiles this week- she smiled the most when Benji was holding her while I was trying to take pictures!
Started working on Kalyn's Christmas craft ornament for year 1 and doing Benji's that I never finished! When I'm done those than we will make Benji's craft for this year.

Week 5 (November 25-30):
I had a doctor appointment in Winnipeg on Monday this week. Kalyn came with me and we were able to see her cousins and aunties and grandma and grandpa for a short visit. The next day Kalyn got her first set of vaccinations- she did well, but maybe not quite as brave as her brother at that age! The most exciting thing that happened this week was that Benji peed in the potty! Now he keeps asking to use it and gets mad when he can't pee. Lol Made a pumpkin pie this week.

October
Week 1 (October 1-6):
October 1: The first day of October Kalyn pulled out her feeding tube for the second time. It was her way of letting the nurses know she was ready to go home because she did all of her feeds by bottle after that! That morning the doctor said she still hadn't showed any weight gain so wanted to monitor her for a few more days. A few more days away from home! I couldn't take that so I talked to Kelly my midwife and she said that we could monitor her weight in Kenora. I spoke to the doctor and he said he would see her at the rounds the next morning. I felt discouraged but hopeful we could go home the next day. Auntie Brenna, Auntie Strephanie and Grandpa visited today.
October 2: Kalyn gained weight overnight so the doctor discharged her! My mom and I packed up the hotel room and happily collected Kalyn after a breakfast of waffles with strawberries and whipped cream- a celebration! My mom drove us home to Kenora while I sat in the back of the car with Kalyn. We stopped once at the Ontario border to change her diaper. It was a sweet sight to see Benji running around with Papa outside as we arrived! Benji met Kalyn for the first time- he peeked into the bassinet with curiosity and liked watching us change her diaper. He would point and say "baby" and when we got him to say her name he would say "Kay Kay".

Week 2 (October 7-13):
General Conference happened the first weekend of the month. It was announced that church will no longer be 3 hours each Sunday but would decrease to 2 hours. 12 new temples announced. 10 day fast from social media recommended at the women's conference.
Thanksgiving 2018: Chicken Pot Pie Casserole and Cheesecake 1.0
Micah is on a role creating new recipes and baked a delicious banana bread topped with nutella.
First snow of the season- 8cm
Kalyn is 6lbs.
We started going through totes in the garage to decide what to pack and what to donate. Started updating movie grading on our website and watching movies we have never graded.

Week 3 (October 14-20):
It's Micah's 33rd birthday this October 16th. We celebrated with Cheesecake 2.0 and some cupcakes that were brought over by Branch President Beaumont and Pacey Wickham. The Enex Siding crew also started today!`
Doctor appointments: Micah finally gets a prescription for Betaderm for his skin rash on hand. Kalyn has midwife appointment- weighs 6lbs 6oz.
Lunch with girl pharmacists from Shoppers, Kathleen and Suzanne. Micah makes another batch of banana bread and gives one to the siding crew. As they are driving away he realizes it is not cooked all the way through and he must have made a mistake in the recipe! He runs after the car to grab it and promises to make another one for tomorrow. One of his top 10 embarrassing moments.
Truck is towed to Rosie's because it will not start. No internet because satellite had to be removed for siding. Cheesecake 3.0 on the weekend and a birthday package from Judi with Micah's favourite teriyaki sauce!

Kalyn turns one month and is now 7lbs 11oz. Gained more than a pound in a week!
Made Cheesecake 4.0- the recipe is now perfected!
Started priming the ceiling in master bedroom. Came up with a lullaby song for Kalyn!

I have been wanting to go to a drive in theatre for so long! There is one in Morden Manitoba so when we found out they were having a triple feature we had to make the 3.5 hour trip! The movies weren't great and Benji wasn't too happy but it was still fun.

I had a fetal assessment in Winnipeg today. They confirmed during the ultrasound that I have marginal placenta previa so I will for sure have to have a c-section to deliver our baby girl. After the appointment I was able to go out for lunch with Brenna and Milo! As I was driving home I got a call from my midwife saying she spoke to the doctor from Winnipeg who said that she wants me to stay in Winnipeg until I have the c-section because it is too dangerous for me to be so far away from medical care in case I started bleeding etc. It was a big shock and now we don't really know what to do! I'm six weeks until baby's due date.

Headed to Winnipeg today for a doctor appointment. I will be staying here until the c section, which I found out will be happening earlier that we thought- in 6 days! I'm nervous but excited I won't have to be away from Micah and Benji for as long. 35 weeks pregnant.

Our baby girl was born today! The c-section was originally scheduled for 9 so we were there at 7am but we didn't end up going in until 2:30! Her name is Kalyn- a combination of Micah's sisters' names: Katie and Lindy. She weighed 5lbs 12oz and has red hair! Soon after she was born they whisked her away to monitor her breathing in the NICU. Micah has able to go visit her while I recovered. I tried going down to see her but I was in so much pain from the c-section. I could barely get out of bed into the wheelchair, then we had to go down the elevator to the first floor. Once inside the unit you have to wash your hands as soon as you go in- that hurt so much trying to reach the soap and water etc. By the time I got to Kalyn I burst into tears from the pain and seeing her hooked up to all the tubes and monitors! I felt worried for her and overwhelmed- I just wanted to hold her! We turned right around and went back upstairs to my room, I couldn't stop crying! I would say vaginal birth is so much better! I started pumping hoping to start my milk supply, I did that every 3 hours all night while sleeping and eating in between.

I was able to go down to see Kalyn today with the help of the nurses wheeling me down. Micah and Benji went back to Winnipeg so this morning it was just me. I was able to hold her and I started crying again (wow, so many emotions!) and I sang her Benji's lullaby. Later I was able to come back down and hold her skin to skin. My mom came to the hospital in the afternoon and helped me visit Kalyn. They are monitoring her breathing (it is too fast because of fluid in her lungs that would normally get squeezed out during a vaginal birth) and her sugars were low so they are monitoring those (by pricking her little heel for blood!) and she is getting an IV. She is being fed formula through a feeding tube. Later in the evening I had a shower (they make you have one) and my mom combed my hair for me and put it in a braid. I felt so much better!

Kalyn's breathing still hasn't changed so she has to stay in the NICU but they want me out of the hospital! I was discharged at around 3:00. My mom gave up her weekend at the lake to stay with me- we checked into the Canad Inns hotel that is connected to the hospital. I still can't walk far distances so we thought the hotel would be a good place to stay and we would just drive around to the front of the Women's Hospital because the entrance to the NICU is right there. Kalyn pulled the feeding tube out of her nose today so the nurses had to put it back in. I changed her diaper today! So hard with all those cords attached to her! She has the craziest color hair- it looks almost neon blonde in the light with a little bit of red!

While visiting Kalyn in the morning I got the worst migraine and sore neck- from the epidural. My mom drove me back to the hotel and she ran out and bought a magic bag. I put it on my neck and passed out for a long nap! We went back to see Kalyn in the evening and she is doing better. They stopped monitoring her sugars and was able to take out the IV. She was able to be taken out of the incubator and was given a crib, they call it "the cage" because it is all metal.

We had gravel delivered and it took us several days in the heat to spread it around. Now we just have to line up the boxes and possibly built a pergola in the middle.
One day we were outside spreading gravel and Benji was with us. He was getting really hot and every time we walked past him with a shovelful he would plead, "up, pleeeaasse" to go inside. Normally he is begging to go outside so it was pretty funny.

Our new riding lawn mower! We had to drive to Dryden to get it- Canadian Tire in Kenora is terrible; we waited 2 weeks for the mower to come in because Kenora said they would order it but it never got ordered and then they told us it was too late in the season to do anything about it. Great customer service... |
